A design is protected in Russia on the basis of its State registration and subsequent issue of a design patent.

Patentability of a design in Russia is established taking into account an image and a set of essential features of the design.
Thus, a Russian design application shall comprise a description of the design, a set of essential features of the design and images of the design.
When compiling a design application, in a set of essential features we typically indicate only those features which are necessary to provide compliance of the design with the patentability criteria; therefore, you can obtain a design patent with the broadest scope of protection.
A design patent is valid for 15 years. This period can be extended additionally for 10 years.
In Russia, there is a grace period 6 months from the date of disclose of a design to the date of filing a design application.
